Masters Swim Program - This program provides an excellent cardiovascular workout for individuals looking to improve their swimming as well as for individuals looking for an alternate cross training opportunity. Over the course of the hour swimmers participate in balanced workouts focusing on endurance, speed, or technique.  Workouts are provided for different abilities ranging from intermediate to advanced swimmers.  The one hour workouts are generally 2700-3600 yards in length.  The class is open to all individuals who can swim freestyle and are comfortable swimming with other people in their lane. For more information contact Stephanie at the Newport Athletic Club 846-7723 extension 1036.

Swimming strengthens the body, regulates breathing, and stimulates circulation. It benefits the upper body, torso and legs together and is a great way to improve general strength, stamina and cardiovascular fitness. As a regular physical activity, swimming can also help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Swimming is a very low impact exercise. The provided weightlessness of the water greatly reduces stress on joints, reducing the potential of back, knee and other muscular injuries. The water pressure against the legs and arms is also beneficial to the circulatory system. The water pressure adds to the muscle pressure exerted on the veins to aid in returning blood to the heart and lungs.
